What is copyright?

Copyright is a legal right that protects original works of authors, such as videos and music. Copyright protects the original expression of an idea (for example, a particular way in which a video or music is expressed or composed) but not the underlying ideas or facts.

How is copyright protection achieved?
Generally, if you create an original work, you automatically get copyright protection.

Copyright protection applies only to original expressions. It does not apply to ideas, procedures, methods of operation or mathematical concepts. For example, a person may own the copyright to a film but not the subject matter or themes expressed in the film.

Can someone else's copyrighted content be shared on TikTok without their permission?

Our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines do not allow you to post, share or submit content that infringes or violates another party's copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property rights.

This includes using another person's copyrighted content without the necessary permission or legally valid reasons.

Does TikTok issue strikes for repeated copyright infringement?
Yes. Under TikTok's Repeat Infringer Policy, we send users a strike if their content has been removed for copyright infringement. There is a limit of 3 strikes for each type of intellectual property, after which we will permanently remove the account.

We count strikes separately for copyright and trademark violations. For example, if you have 2 strikes for copyright infringement and 2 strikes for trademark infringement, your account will not be blocked.

How can you prevent your content from being removed due to copyright infringement?
You should only share original content on TikTok. If you intend to use someone else's content, we recommend that you first obtain that person's permission.

Under certain circumstances, you may be allowed to use another party's copyrighted content without their permission. For example, if the content is in a public domain or permitted by law.
